MAMARONECK, New York (WABC) -- Police in Mamaroneck are searching for a man accused of groping a woman early Sunday morning after she and two friends realized they were being followed while walking home.

Gramoz Gojani said he heard screams from his apartment and looked outside, where he caught a glimpse of the suspect.

"The guy was, completely wearing black clothes, and he had the jumper covering his head, and he had a face mask in it. And he had a hand like this, and he was running towards Halstead Avenue," Gojani said.

One of the three women told Eyewitness News that the group had been walking home from a bar about a mile away when they realized they were being followed on Halstead Avenue.

"He grabbed her around her waist. And then she started screaming. My other friend jumped on them," the woman said.

Police said the victim was groped during the struggle. The friend repeatedly kicked the suspect, according to the report.

The victim suffered scrapes to her arms but was otherwise unharmed following what authorities described as a random attack in the community

"In this neighborhood, I've been leaving for the last almost five years. Never have something like that. Never never, never," Gojani said.

Detectives are asking homeowners to review surveillance and doorbell camera footage that could help the investigation. Police also have increased patrols as the search for the suspect continues.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Village of Mamaroneck Police Department's Investigations Division at (914) 777-1122. Anonymous tips will be accepted.

Police also reminded residents to stay aware of their surroundings, travel in groups when possible and report suspicious activity immediately.
