'World's largest swimming lesson' aims to teach children how to swim, set world record

PATCHOGUE (WABC) -- The kids at the Patchogue YMCA on Long Island are among the thousands of kids worldwide who are learning how to swim. It is an international effort to set the fifth world record as the world's largest swimming lesson.

The goal is to raise awareness about the importance of teaching kids to swim.

"Accidentally kids fall in and they drown, and we don't want that to happen," said parent Efrain Villafane.

Every day, 2 children under the age of 14 die from unintentional drowning. Research shows that if children do not know how to swim by the third grade, the odds are they never will.

Aquatic Director Tracie Busch says they start teaching babies at 6 months, but always keep the head above the water.

"We don't do any forced submersions, we don't dunk them or anything like that here at the Y," says Busch, "we show them how to blow bubbles, how to expel air, splashing - that way they get comfortable in the water."

When it comes to safety in the water, it may seem obvious, but make sure kids are always supervised and a lifeguard is present. Also, teach children to swim with a buddy and to look before they jump.

If you see a child in distress, your first instinct is to jump in, but you shouldn't especially if you don't know how to swim. Instead, use a skimmer or another long object like a noodle to bring in the panicked child.

"Reaching out and grabbing on to something is better than having them grab on to yourself," says Aquatic Manager Christina Frank.

If you have a pool in your backyard, it is important to learn CPR. No matter what age you are, it is never too late to learn how to swim. 4-year-old Brett McKeon told Eyewitness News that the lessons are fun, but there is one thing he likes better - when he goes up the stairs when everything is all over.

Hundreds of aquatic centers, pools and water parks around the globe are hosting World's Largest Swimming Lesson events on June 20th in an attempt to set a fifth Guinness World Record to build water awareness about the vital importance of teaching kids to swim.
