FEMA: Federal assistance in Puerto Rico tops $1 billion

SAN JUAN, Puerto RIco (WABC) -- FEMA now says federal assistance in Puerto Rico tops $1 billion.

The agency says it has helped more than 360,000 families on the island, while more than a million residents have registered for assistance.

The official death toll stands at 64.

A New York Times analysis found that more than 1,000 people likely died from hurricanes Irma and Maria.
