Man in critical condition after being pulled from the waters of Rockaway Beach

ROCKAWAY BEACH, Queens (WABC) -- A man is in critical condition after he rescued his brother from the waters off Rockaway Beach in Queens, and then had to be rescued himself.

The 31-year-old initially went into the waters off Beach 85th Street on Thursday to rescue his brother, who was being overcome by the waters.

He then had to be rescued himself from the rough waves.

Police say the victim began to drown and was pulled out of the ocean by good Samaritans.

NYPD officers responded to the scene and took the victim to Staten Island University North where he's in critical condition.

His brother refused medical attention at the scene.
