The NYPD was acting out of an abundance of caution, both due to the bomb threat in the U.S. Capitol and a heightened concern about security in Afghanistan.
West 45th to West 48th streets in Times Square reopened to pedestrians and traffic.
A man on a bicycle dropped a metal container with crackers inside near the outdoor seating area.
The container was recovered and is not considered a threat.
The incident is not believed criminal and police are not actively looking for the man.
