A white BMW attempted to pass a tractor-trailer at 1:43 a.m., apparently causing the crash near the exits for the Major Deegan Expressway.
The BMW smashed into the rear driver's side of the tractor-trailer.
It became pinned between the truck and concrete divider.
The passenger inside the vehicle, 22-year-old Sulayman Njie of the Bronx, was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
The 19-year-old driver of the vehicle suffered minor injuries.
The 52-year-old tractor-trailer driver was not injured and remained at the scene.
Excessive speed is being examined as a possible factor in the crash.
The identity of the driver and victim have not yet been released.
The crash closed the westbound lanes of the Cross Bronx Expressway for Wednesday morning's commute.
