MASTIC BEACH (WABC) -- A 42-year-old homeless man accused of assaulting two women in their 70s during two home burglaries in Mastic Beach tried to rape one of the victims, officials said.

Derrick Clancy was charged with two felony counts of first-degree burglary for breaking into two homes in Mastic Beach.

In one of the break-ins that took place on October 10, Clancy allegedly punched a 75-year-old woman in the face repeatedly and took her clothes off.

In the other that took place on October 17, he climbed through an unlocked window and broke into the home of a 78-year-old woman, authorities said.

Both women were home alone at the time. They were both treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Clancy appeared in court on Monday in a white and green county correctional facility jumpsuit and was handcuffed in a wheelchair.

The 42-year-old stated repeatedly that he wanted to plead guilty and did not want his appointed lawyer.

Clancy is a registered sex offender and is homeless. He is also accused of violating the terms of his parole.

His parole officer testified at his arraignment, saying Clancy has repeatedly refused treatment for being a sex offender and for alcohol abuse among other violations.

Clancy was released from state prison in July 2023.
