Officials say the 23-year-old victim, Khalil King of North Carolina, was found inside the smoke shop with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office's Homicide Unit is now investigating along with Jersey City Police.

The smoke shop is on the ground level of what appears to be a residential building -- and right next to Public School 20.

Eyewitness News spoke to one woman who lives down the block -- she says the neighborhood is safe, but worries about violence happening at smoke shops.

"You don't want to see that in your neighborhood. You don't want to see people die for one. You talk about gun violence and there's no reason for that -- I don't care what happened," said April Rosario.
