BENSONHURST, Brooklyn (WABC) -- It was the perfect birthday surprise for a 10-year-old girl who has been waiting for a kidney donor for the past year.

Khadijah Sabir, a 5th-grader from Brooklyn, was diagnosed with chronic kidney failure last year and has been in desperate need of a kidney.

She gets dialysis for 10 hours a day, seven days a week.

After her story first aired on Eyewitness News last month, several people came forward to be tested as possible donors.

One of those people has now been cleared to be her donor and Khadijah will receive her new kidney.

On Friday, her school hosted Khadijah Day to celebrate her and help educate her peers on kidney transplants and dialysis.

But she had no idea as she sat at the school assembly on Friday that her life would change forever. That is when she found out the good news.

The surgery will take place in a couple weeks and her life is going to get so much better.

"What's life like, your identity has been a kid who has had dialysis and what is it like now, how do you re-acclimate to your new life," said Sarah Roffe with Weill Cornell New York Presbyterian.

When asked what she looks forward to most, Khadijah simply said having more fun.
