The move was the last step in a $500 million project to bring modern toll collecting to all of the Port Authority's bridges and tunnels.
The new toll collection system, which began Sunday, will collect payments through E-ZPass or by taking a picture of your license plate and sending you a bill in the mail.
With the change, the Port Authority says it'll save drivers over one million gallons of fuel a year and reduce over 11,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide yearly with the elimination of lanes and booths.
It also believes it is "a win-win" for drivers because it shortens their commutes and will reduce accidents in the toll lanes.
This news comes nearly a month after the Port Authority announced an increase in toll prices on local bridges and tunnels.
Back in November, the agency said it lost $3 billion during the pandemic, and that the high rate of inflation, as reflected in the U.S. Consumer Price Index, has triggered the one-dollar increase for tolls.
The Port Authority recommends that all drivers who don't currently have an E-ZPass, sign up for one.
