NEW CANAAN, Conn. (WABC) -- A Metro-North train came to a crashing halt after it ran off the end of the track and derailed in Connecticut Tuesday morning.

Just after 7:30 a.m. the train crashed into what's called the bumping block at the end of the line of the New Canaan branch and came to rest halfway onto the sidewalk.

"For reasons that are under investigation. It struck the bumping block. So, that will be part of the investigation. Why did the train strike the bumping block? When it struck the bumping block it caused the rear part of this car to derail," Metro-North Railroad President Catherine Rinaldi said.

The empty train was pulling into the station to pick up passengers headed south.

Train service was initially suspended on the branch, replaced by bus service until the affected train could be removed and any repairs to the tracks be done.
