RFK Bridge back open after NY State trooper fires shot trying to stop car

HARLEM, New York (WABC) -- All lanes of the RFK Triborough Bridge are back open after an incident in which a New York State trooper fired a round of shots at a suspect.

The scene unfolded Sunday around 12:45 p.m. about half a mile onto the bridge from the Queens side.

Police said a trooper was struck by a vehicle during the incident, suffered minor injuries, and was taken to the Elmhurst Hospital.

The driver was not able to make it past Harlem. Authorities stopped a grey Acura at 140th Street and Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard.

The MTA reports their officers arrested a 21-year-old driver and several blocks away, nabbed the 17-year-old passenger.

Two Manhattan/Bronx-bound lanes and the left Queens-bound lane were closed for the rest of the day Sunday as the investigation continued.

Video from the scene showed traffic on the bridge was at a standstill.

At least three vehicles had been damaged and a number of innocent drivers caught up in the danger zone.

The state trooper suffered minor injuries. Seven officers and four civilians were taken to are hospitals for treatment.

All lanes were reopened just before 12 a.m. Monday.
