3 injured in shooting after high school football game in Newburgh, Orange County

Police are investigating a shooting that injured three people after a high school football game in Orange County Friday night.

Officers were at the scene, working security for the game at the Newburgh Free Academy campus when gunshots rang out just after 9:30 p.m.

Authorities say at least five shots were fired after a fight in the parking lot.

"We're pouring through video evidence, cellphone footage, eyewitness accounts and obviously the victims at the hospital so there's a lot of information coming in but there's no danger to the public," Newburgh Police Chief Anthony Geraci said.

Police say three people, a 43-year-old woman, a 19-year-old woman, and a 21-year-old man, suffered gun shot wounds to their legs and were taken to St. Luke's hospital where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Police believe the altercation was an isolated incident. They are searching for two persons of interest.

The Warwick Valley Central School District, which was Newburgh's opponent in the game, said it would not be taking part in any sports or extracurricular activities in Newburgh until further notice.



The Newburgh Enlarged City School District released a statement that said the shooting occurred "outside of the security perimeter for an event taking place."

All campus activities scheduled for Saturday have been canceled.

The district said its Critical Stress Management Team was preparing to help students and families who may need support.

School officials urged anyone with information to call the City of Newburgh Detective Division at 845-569-7509.
