Police say two suspects attacked the president of a competitive car club over a minor accident on the Hutchinson River Parkway near Pelham Manor which occurred hours earlier.
When 34-year-old Jeremy Cancel tried to intervene, they say one of the gunmen began shooting.
Cancel, who lived in Yonkers with his wife and two kids, was shot in the chest and pronounced dead at St. Barnabas Hospital. Two others were injured.
Louis Rivera is among those keeping vigil at the growing memorial on West Farms Road where friends of Cancel have been gathering. Those who knew him best called the 34-year-old "Littles."
"He was a brother to me, he was always there for me, I always there for him, I was fixing his cars," Cancel's friend JJ Rivera said. "He'd call me for any little thing. It's just hard right now."
Cars were a passion for Cancel, who was a member of a car club called Team Silencio, a group of enthusiasts with chapters throughout the Tri-State area. Cancel installed custom auto sound systems, including the one in his own car.
"We'd get together, we'd go to car shows, we'd try to win trophies, it was just a family pretty much," Louis Rivera said.
