SHEEPSHEAD BAY, Brooklyn (WABC) -- A man was found fatally shot inside the stairwell of a Brooklyn public housing complex.

The man was found with a gunshot wound to his head.

Investigators say the 37-year-old man was seen going into the Nostrands Houses on Batchelder Street in Sheepshead Bay with a friend around 11 p.m. Monday.

He didn't live in the building where the murder happened, he actually lives in another building nearby.

When police arrived, they found the 37-year-old man shot in the first-floor stairwell area inside the building and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neighbors were shocked to learn of the violence.

Mike Brandquist was parked outside the Nostrand Houses early Tuesday checking on his friends after learning someone was found murdered late Monday night.

"One of my friends who didn't know, I moved out, texted me because he found out it happened on the floor I grew up on. So I'm calling everyone at 1 o'clock in the morning," he said.

"When I woke up this morning I went to the store to get my coffee like I normally do. I didn't hear anything at all and the building's connected to mine," said Mira, Nostrand Houses resident.

Some neighbors say they spend a lot of time indoors because of the violence they hear about in the community.

For Brandquist, who lived in the complex for 40 years before moving out, that's disheartening news. He says it used to be a great place to grow up in.

"It's sad to say, but it's like every year it got a little worse," he said.

No one has been arrested and police are still trying to determine the motive for the deadly shooting.
The name of the victim has not yet been released by police.
