BEDFORD-STUYVESANT, Brooklyn (WABC) -- An NYPD officer and a suspect were shot while police were responding to what they described as "a family dispute" at an apartment in Brooklyn on Wednesday.

Officers from the 79th precinct were dispatched to a building on Gates Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant around 8:30 a.m. after receiving a call that a man was destroying the inside of the apartment.

When officers arrived they saw the damage that was done to the apartment and proceeded to place 41-year-old Raheen Joye under arrest, according to police.

A struggle ensued and Joye fired one shot striking seven-year veteran Orlando Adorno in the right foot.

Joye then ran from officers who pursued on foot and in a cruiser eventually catching up to him on Monroe Street.

Joye fired two shots at officers who fired back striking him twice in the thigh. Once officers subdued Joye they placed him under arrest and transported him to an area hospital.

The police officer who shot the suspect was being treated for tinnitus.

Meanwhile officer Adorno was transported to Kings County Hospital in a police cruiser.

"Because of officer Adorno and his partner's actions we have a dangerous person off our streets we have an illegal gun off our street," Mayor Eric Adams said.

NYPD Police Commissioner Kechant Sewell said this is the 10th officer shot this year.

"He answered a call for help he's a seven-year veteran officer he's a husband and a father and thankfully he's going to recover," Sewell said. "I am deeply grateful for their courage and commitment they deserve our respect and need your support."
Joye has 17 prior arrests in Georgia and an outstanding warrant for weapons possession in Troy, New York.

Officers recovered a 9mm handgun from Joye during the arrest.

PBA President Pat Lynch asked all New Yorkers to acknowledge the job officers are doing this holiday season.

"Remember that there are police officers responding to chaos and violence on our streets," Lynch said.

He demanded the criminal justice system "do their jobs like the police department has done theirs" and keep repeat offenders off the street.
