The body of 52-year-old Miriam Sussman was found in a wooded area along West Carlton Road in Monsey.
She was discovered after a report of a missing person just before 12:45 a.m. Monday led to a search by the Town of Ramapo Police Department.
Investigators determined that she had been struck by a car after gathering evidence at the scene.
"There was evidence at the scene indicative of a car crash as well as the trauma to the body, we are comfortable saying it certainly was a hit and run accident at this time." said Ramapo Police Department Lt. Blaine Howell. "The body appears to have been thrown quite a distance which would indicate that speed played a factor in this crash. But it is still very early on and I can't say that for certain."
Police did not release any information about the car they are searching for.
Authorities are asking anyone who has any information about the crash to call the Ramapo Police Department at 845-357-2400.
Ramapo Town Supervisor Michael Specht released the following statement:
"I join together with our entire community in mourning the tragic death of Mrs. Miriam Sussman on Sunday evening. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Sussman family during this trying time, and our hearts and minds are with the entire Ramapo community that is grieving this terrible loss. The safety of all our residents is of paramount importance, and the Ramapo Police Department is thoroughly investigating the circumstances surrounding Mrs. Sussman's untimely passing as she was evidently walking along Carlton Road. May the Sussman family know no further sorrow and may Mrs. Miriam Sussman's memory be a blessing."
