Police are still piecing together what exactly led up to this shooting incident as multiple bullets sprayed the street.
As many as 20 shell casings were found at the scene.
Eyewitness News was told this may have been a shootout between two groups.
The victim was taken to Kings County Hospital where she's expected to survive.
Her family tells us the 84 year old's name is Althea Lawson, a cancer survivor with a bright personality.
Enid Lawson is the victim's older sister and she says she was inside the apartment they share together when she found out she was hurt.
"I was right inside here and somebody called and said she got hurt," Lawson said, fighting back tears. "When she looked, blood was spilling down and that's when she said she got shot."
Police are searching for the suspect who fled on foot.
Neighbors in the area said they heard the entire event unfold.
"I just heard a lot of shots and then I heard a lot of people talking. I didn't look out the window because I figured out that they were gunshots and I didn't want to look out the window and they were still shooting," an area resident told Eyewitness News.
A good Samaritan says he and others ran over to help when they heard the gun shots and was with her until help arrived.
