In just the last week and half, seven people were killed in three different fires in two different boroughs.
The first happened back on May 4 in Inwood, where three people were killed in a fire caused by a lit cigarette.
Two days later, three more people died in a fire that authorities say was intentionally set in Mott Haven.
Then, just two days ago, a 1-year-old was killed when a fire broke out in Fordham.
These recent fires have had a common and deadly denominator.
After the flames broke out, people fled their apartments and the building, and left doors open behind them. That allowed the fires to spread out of control.
"Shut the door" is a most important mantra when anyone leaves their home that is on fire.
Eyewitness News sat down with FDNY Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore, who is spreading that mantra to all New Yorkers, in the hopes it will help save lives.
