NEW YORK (WABC) -- Flooding is receding after heavy rain and gusty winds wreaked havoc on the New York area Tuesday. Coastal flooding led to dozens of accidents on slick highways.

New Jersey

Minor flooding was reported during in New Jersey Tuesday's high tide along the Raritan Bay shore in Monmouth County, as well as in Ocean City, West Wildwood and southern Long Beach Island. Some inland communities are experiencing flooding as well. An additional inch or two is possible, along with wind gusts of 50 to 55 mph.

Freezing rain around Interstate 287 and northwest New Jersey made for slippery driving conditions, and motorists were urged to slow down. More than two dozen schools in the northwest part of the state delayed opening on Tuesday. Scattered power outages are also reported, and New Jersey Transit buses and trains are cross-honoring tickets.

New York

State police say wet conditions have caused several crashes on roads and highways in New York City, Long Island and areas to the north and west of the city. At least one person was killed in a crash involving 5 tractor trailers and two passenger vehicles on Route 17 eastbound in the Town of Rock Hill in Sullivan County, closing the roadway.

The Bronx River Parkway, Hutchinson River Parkway and Taconic State Parkway had all reopened buy rush hour Wednesday morning after flooding left stretches of those roads closed. Troopers said they're investigating crashes on the Taconic State Parkway.

The biggest problem on Long Island was at the Northern State Parkway, which was shut down in both directions at Exit 35 in Jericho. A pump truck at the scene was working to clear the standing water.

Nine passengers on a commuter bus involved in an accident were hospitalized, with four passengers taken to Hartford Hospital's emergency room as icy rain is making roads slick and dangerous across Connecticut. A spokesman for an ambulance service that responded to the commuter bus accident said highway cameras appeared to show a spinout.

Several other accidents involving tractor-trailers were reported, though conditions improved as temperatures rose midmorning and rain replaced sleet. Heavy rain totals could reach 1 to 2 inches.
