The shutdown comes as President Donald Trump and Congress failed to strike an agreement to keep government programs and services running by Wednesday's deadline.
On Wednesday, Hochul and other leaders called out President Trump and Washington Republicans.
"After voting to gut food assistance and healthcare for millions of New Yorkers, Republicans in Congress - including seven members from New York - are once again recklessly siding with Donald Trump to shut down the federal government. Republicans were given another chance to stand up for their constituents, yet they chose to leave town rather than work in good faith to avoid a government shutdown," Governor Hochul said. "The GOP shutdown will have devastating effects on workers, small businesses and families throughout our state. Washington Republicans need to do their damn jobs, actually stand up for the people they serve, and come to the table to end this shutdown."
Officials say with more than 115,000 federal employees in New York State, tens of thousands will be furloughed, while essential federal employees, including air traffic controllers and TSA employees, will be forced to work without pay.
The governor said that Trump's agenda will strip 1.5 million New Yorkers of health coverage, put 300,000 New Yorkers at risk of losing SNAP benefits and it will burden hospitals with over $3 billion annually in uncompensated care costs.
Essential workers like TSA agents, air traffic controllers, border patrol agents and military troops will keep working, but with no paychecks.
Hochul also announced New York will not use state funds keep the Statue of Liberty open, as it has done in past shutdowns.
During the last government shutdown in 2018, then-Gov. Andrew Cuomo used about $65,000 a day out of the state's tourism budget to keep open the Statue and nearby Ellis Island, which are operated by the National Park Service. The state estimated at that time that 12,000 visitors were turned away daily before the state began paying for the sites' operating costs.
