NEW YORK (WABC) -- Hurricane Humberto weakened very slightly but remained a strong Category 4 storm in the Atlantic, threatening Bermuda.

Hurricane Humberto had maximum sustained winds of 155 mph on Sunday morning, according to the Miami-based National Hurricane Center's latest advisory. The storm was located about 585 miles south of Bermuda.

Humberto could produce life-threatening surf and rip currents for the northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Bermuda over the weekend, forecasters said.

Humberto is expected to move west of Bermuda on Tuesday and Wednesday and stay hundreds of miles away from the U.S., eventually going out to sea without making landfall.

Meanwhile, a tropical storm warning associated with Tropical Depression 9 was issued for the Central Bahamas.

Forecasters said the system was on track to become a tropical storm later Sunday and a hurricane by late Monday or Tuesday. It would be named Imelda.

As of Sunday morning, the system was located about 100 miles (160 kilometers) west-southwest of the Central Bahamas and was headed north-northwest at 7 mph (11 kph). Its maximum sustained winds were 35 mph (55 kph).

The hurricane center said the system would likely develop into a tropical storm on Sunday. A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for portions of the northwestern Bahamas and parts of the east coast of Florida.

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster urged people to monitor the weather closely and stay alert. And in North Carolina, Gov. Josh Stein declared a state of emergency in advance of the system.
