A 64-year-old woman reported that she was awakened out of her sleep after being hit in the face with an object.
The incident happened around 2:30 Sunday morning.
"There were police out on the street asking if we have footage or the Ring camera," said Danasia Jones, who works at a nearby group home.
The victim's house has cameras, but it's not clear if they're working.
Gloves were left behind at the scene near Straight and North lanes.
"We've been here for 17 years and she's been nothing but nice and I can't imagine something like this happening to her," said one neighbor.
Many in the neighborhood were too afraid to speak to Eyewitness News on camera. They say they are shocked.
"This happening to her is very, very sad and we never experienced anything like this in this neighborhood," a neighbor said.
"It is surprising. It's upsetting because she's a nice lady," Jones said. "I saw her a couple of times in her yard, planting and stuff, so she's a nice lady."
Many people described the victim, who works as a lawyer, as a loving person.
"We're like family. She comes over here, plays with our children, my mom and the last time we sat down and we were chatting was on last Friday," a neighbor said.
"I still feel like it's a safe block but that's definitely something scary. I definitely have a close eye on my kids, probably closing the doors a little bit more, making sure the doors are locked at night," a neighbor said.
Meanwhile, the woman was transported to an area hospital and treated for her injuries.
"I only hope and pray and ask of God that she can recover and be back with us," a neighbor said.
The suspect was apparently able to flee the home without being seen.
Nassau police say it's not clear if the attacker left in a vehicle or on foot.
So far, no arrests have been made.
