NEW YORK (WABC) -- The Macy's Fourth of July Fireworks kicked off a little earlier Saturday night to avoid the threat of strong thunderstorms, and did so successfully.

The spectacular fireworks show was originally scheduled for 9:25 p.m. on Saturday, but was moved up to 9:02 p.m.

It all went off without a hitch even as much of the area was hit by nasty weather.

There was no damper on the annual celebration which honored America's 250th birthday. The 50th edition of the nation's largest Independence Day celebration lit up New York City with 85,000 shells in 30 colors from six barges.

The Brooklyn Bridge dripped in gold thanks to a new laser show, making everyone feel like a kid again.

"It's awesome man, you know. Freedom for 250 years, who can ask for better stuff than that?" said one spectator.

Thousands of wide-eyed spectators gazed at the night sky bursting with color, ablaze in red, white and blue over the East River. The FDR Drive was shut down for them to take it all in.

"I'm so excited because it's my second time here in New York, and it's the best celebration, so I'm excited," said a spectator named Melanie.

Those who were in attendance reflected on what's important as the nation moves forward.

"I'm excited because I'm in this great country," said spectator Karma Bhutia. "I came as an immigrant here but I'm a citizen now so I'm really proud of this country. This country gave me a lot.

The dazzling display was also viewed by crowds on the other side of the Hudson in Jersey City.

From their vantage point, spectators could see the fireworks on the Hudson and up the East River as the synchronized tribute lit up the night sky.

The Jersey City celebration of the nation's 250th birthday was a day-long event with food and fun for everyone.

Meanwhile, the FDNY said they were responding to the Manhattan-bound side of the Brooklyn Bridge for reports of a rubbish fire that ignited during the fireworks show. The small fire started as fireworks were firing off the Brooklyn Bridge.
