The shooting happened around 6:40 p.m. in front of the 111th precinct station house along Northern Boulevard and 215th Street in Bayside.
NYPD officials say a 79-year-old man exited his vehicle and approached the front of the station, where he was confronted by an officer who began talking to him.
They say the suspect then took out a loaded gun and pointed it at the officer. The officer ordered him multiple times to drop it while radioing for backup, but the suspect refused to comply, and continued to point his weapon at the officer.
Additional officers arrived and also ordered the suspect to drop his weapon.
When the suspect continued to refuse, four officers fired their weapons, striking the man multiple times.
Officers performed CPR on the man before EMS rushed him to NewYork-Presbyterian, where he was pronounced dead.
Police released a photo of a loaded Cobra 38 special firearm that was recovered at the scene.
Authorities identified the man as Emil Williams of Great Neck who had recently been reported missing in Nassau County.
His family went to Nassau County Police, to report him missing and in mental decline.
NYPD officials say the incident was caught on police body cam and precinct security cameras, and is being investigated.
During Tuesday night's briefing, NYPD Assistant Chief Brian Hennessy noted that this is the second time in less than 12 hours that officers have been confronted by armed individuals.
The other incident happened Tuesday morning on the Lower East Side, where an NYPD detective was shot in the arm while trying to execute a warrant.
