New Marist poll gives Mamdani commanding lead in race for New York City mayor

NEW YORK (WABC) -- In the race for New York City mayor, another new poll out Tuesday shows Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani with a commanding lead.

In the new Marist poll, Mamdani leads the group of candidates with 45%.

The next closest is former Gov. Andrew Cuomo with 24%, followed by Curtis Sliwa with 17% and incumbent Mayor Eric Adams in last with 9%. Five percent of likely voters say they're undecided.

The poll also looked at what may happen if the race came down to just Mamdani and Cuomo.

In that race, 49% of likely voters would support Mamdani while 39% would back Cuomo.

Mamdani has built his campaign on affordability, and it's emerged as the biggest issue in the race, with 88% of likely voters telling Marist pollsters that New York is either, "not very affordable or not affordable at all."Only 12% said the city is "affordable or very affordable."

The former governor continued to attack Mamdani on Tuesday, insisting a socialist mayor is a threat to New York.

"They know that you have a socialist and you have a Democrat, and that's apples and oranges, and it's a very clear choice," Cuomo said.

Adams said the Marist poll reflects a campaign that has just started up.

"We have not done one TV ad, not one mailing, we have just started knocking on doors," Adams said.

The mayor reiterated he is not dropping out and said there is still time for a comeback.

The poll comes just days after Gov. Kathy Hochul endorsed Mamdani for mayor. She was asked about the influence her endorsement would have on other top democrats, and said "others will have to make their own decisions for their own reasons."

But her endorsement appears to have swayed Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, who is now expected to publicly voice support for his fellow assemblyman by the end of the week.

Cuomo downplayed Hochul's endorsement of Mamdani on Tuesday, while wondering why it wasn't reciprocated.

"I don't think these endorsements mean anything, I was surprised she endorsed him, but he didn't endorse her," Cuomo said.

The Marist survey mirrors several polls released last week showing Mamdani with double-digit leads in a four-person field, with the race tightening if either Adams or Sliwa drop out.

Lee Miningoff conducted this latest poll for Marist.

"It's sort of like, wow, you know? No matter how you tap into this electorate, you get a very similar response right now," Miringoff said.

Regardless of whether Mayor Adams or Sliwa quits the race, Miringoff says Cuomo needs a game-changer and probably can't win without it.

"Whether that Cuomo can pull that off, given how well known he is and how negative he's perceived, may be a tall order for him," Miringoff said.
