Montvale Mayor Mike Ghassali said the school bus, carrying 31, including students, was heading to New York State on the parkway when it crashed just before the James Gandolfini service area.
One of those students, a 14-year-old boy, was critically hurt in the crash that happened just after 7:30 p.m. Monday.
In a post on Facebook, the mayor said no fatalities have been reported, and the most serious injury "now has a pulse."
In a later post, the mayor said the 14-year-old boy was, at one point, pinned under the overturned bus.
Of the 31 total occupants, Ghassali said 13 were taken to local hospitals.
The driver, 44-year-old Joseph Itzkowitz, suffered minor injuries.
The bus was apparently carrying Yeshiva students to an event in New Square, NY to celebrate the birth of a rabbi's grandchild.
Several area agencies responded to the accident, including groups from New York and New Jersey.
It's not yet clear what led the bus to overturn, or if there were any other vehicles involved.
New Jersey State Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
