NEW YORK (WABC) -- The New York City Council voted on Tuesday to elect Julie Menin as its next speaker.

Menin was elected by a unanimous 51-0 vote after 90 minutes of explanations of votes by members.

Menin, a moderate from the Upper East Side, will be the council's first Jewish speaker. She is the daughter of a Holocaust survivor.

"I am deeply honored and humbled that my City Council colleagues have elected me as Speaker," Menin said. "New York has a long history of turning moments of challenge into moments of opportunity. Together, we will forge a new City Council that takes a more forceful and proactive approach to New York's shared goals. That includes enacting universal child care, lowering skyrocketing health care costs, building more affordable housing, and slashing fines and bureaucratic red tape for small businesses."

One of the first jobs of the new speaker is to decide whether to override 19 vetoes that former Mayor Eric Adams issued on his last day in office.

Menin has previously vowed to work with the mayor on shared priorities, like child care and affordability, but she will serve as a check on the mayor, specifically on the most left-leaning aspects of his agenda.
