The law allows health care providers to provide life-ending medication to patients who qualify.
To be eligible, a person must be at least 18 years old, be of sound mind and have a medically confirmed illness expected to lead to death within six months.
Patients also must be able to self-administer the lethal dose.
New York is now the 14th state to legalize medical aid in dying.
If you are experiencing suicidal, substance use or other mental health crises please call or text the new three-digit code at 988. You will reach a trained crisis counselor for free, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You can also go to 988lifeline.org.
