It happened in the area of Howland Avenue and Village Circle just before 11 a.m.
Three Shade Tree employees were trimming trees there when they were stung. One employee suffered severe stings while the the other two were stung moderately, police said.
"They were in a bucket truck when they stumbled across a bees nest," said Paramus police Captain Brian McGovern. "As you could imagine the bees were very aggressive and defensive.
One of the workers was stung 40 times. She was taken to the hospital and has since been treated and released.
The bees were active over 45 minutes after the tree was disturbed.
Their hive is in the trunk of the tree and the local beekeeper told cops just to leave the bees alone.
"Got to give yourself time and distance, and they will subside," added McGovern.
Officials said the bees did calm down and went back to their nest.
