The City Council passed the legislation known as 'Skip the Stuff' back in June. It makes it illegal to slip plastic forks or spoons into a takeout bag unless the customer specifically asks for utensils.
Hoboken will issue a warning to business that do not comply with the law. They will receive a $100 fine for the first violation, $200 fo the second, and $500 for the third and any subsequent violations.
Hoboken residents can report violations HERE. The city says they will use the reports to provide information and education to business prior to handing out fines.
Council members hope the law helps lower the amount of waste from single-use plastics.
