It happened inside the 72nd Street subway station just after 3:15 p.m. Friday.
Police said the 26-year-old man was attacked after telling the suspect that he needed to pay the fare in order to enter the station.
The victim was exiting the station when he encountered the suspect, who then struck him multiple times in the face with an unknown object, police said.
The suspect is described as a man, in his 40s, who fled from the station.
The victim was taken to Mount Sinai Morningside in stable condition.
No arrests have been made.
