Press Secretary for the Mayor Joe Calvello confirmed that all three victims died in their homes over the weekend.
"Extreme heat is deadly. Every year, roughly 500 New Yorkers lose their lives to heat-related illness," Calvello said in a statement. "That is why our administration undertook a massive, whole-of-government approach to respond to the extreme heat emergency: opening hundreds of cooling centers across the five boroughs, extending hours at outdoor pools, and expanding outreach to older adults, homeless New Yorkers, and others most at risk."
He said the city will continue to remain "vigilant" in order to protect New Yorkers from the growing threat of extreme heat and other severe weather.
The four day-heat wave began on Wednesday, and lasted through Saturday, July 4, with temperatures reaching as high as 100 degrees in some areas, with heat indices even higher than that.
The heat wave finally broke on Sunday, when temperatures fell back down into the 80s.
In New Jersey, scorching temperatures are suspected to have caused at least 25 deaths.
