BRONX (WABC) -- New York City's first Muslim mayor, Zohran Mamdani, marked Eid Al-Adha, the festival of sacrifice, by joining New Yorkers in prayer at Macombs Dam Park in the Bronx Wednesday.

In one of the most important holidays in the Islamic calendar, Mamdani emphasized solidarity and helping New Yorkers in need.

In observance, New York City schools and offices are closed.

Thousands of Muslims throughout the Middle East are marking the celebration by offering prayers at various mosques.

The festival coincides with the final rites of the Haji Pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.
