Adams volunteered at a food pantry in the Bronx on Friday -- a campaign stop intended to demonstrate that his reelection effort is still on track.
But at a meeting with key business leaders this week, Adams said he would commission his own poll to determine whether he has any hope of winning.
"We're going to do our analysis, we're going to find out what's the right message for our voters, what they need to understand about what I've done in this city," Adams said.
The latest polls show Adams running fourth in a four-way race for City Hall. And he resents any suggestion that he should drop out of the race-to help clear the field for former Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
He says the rumors are crippling his campaign.
"Who's making it appear as though Eric is not running? Like, that's the story," Adams said.
The mayor was asked if he thinks it's Cuomo.
"Well, I know that he has gone to several events and said you're wasting your money, don't do any to Eric," Adams said. "And so now we know it costs money to run a campaign."
The latest polls give Cuomo a theoretical path to victory-but only in a two-way race against Mamdani.
"He's not a viable candidate, and what he's doing is help elect Mamdani, and every day that goes on, he's being more helpful to Mamdani," Cuomo said.
On Friday, President Donald Trump belittled Mamdani on morning television, but acknowledged that he's likely to win City Hall.
"I call him my little communist, he's my little communist mayor, you look at the other candidates, maybe one-on-one somebody could beat him, and I'm not looking at the polls too carefully, but it would look like he's going to win. And that's a rebellion," Trump said.
