Federal agents make one of the largest meth busts in New York City history

NEW YORK (WABC) -- DEA agents seized the largest amount of meth in recent history in New York City.

They discovered 300 pounds of crystal meth worth $1 million.

The way it was smuggled into the Tri-State is something local agents haven't seen before.

"This is one of the most unique smuggling methods we've seen in recent memory," said Frank Tarentino, the special agent in charge of the DEA's New York division.

When agents first opened a tractor trailer in Brooklyn, it appeared to be filled with boxes of papayas. But, agents said, the smugglers sawed compartments into the wooden pallets to conceal the packages of drugs.

"The organization, in this case the cartel, used a lot of ingenuity and skill to essentially secrete these kilograms inside of the pallets themselves so they were hidden from the naked eye," said Tarentino.

The agents involved said they've traced the drugs from where they were discovered in Brooklyn, all the way down to Sinaloa, Mexico, where the Sinaloa drug cartel operates.

"So this seizure is directly related to the Sinaloa cartel which is one of the two most dominant cartels responsible for fentanyl and meth that's flooding into America and that's killing Americans," said Tarentino.

The agents said it's proof that meth is making a resurgence.

"The organizations that we're dealing with are very adaptable and they change very quickly and it's easy for them to shift from producing fentanyl and shipping it to the United States to meth and cocaine," said Tarentino. "What we're seeing are these organizations adapting to some of our law enforcement techniques."

Meth is highly addictive and cheap to make. While the kilos seized are pure crystal meth, by the time it reaches a user in powder or pill form, it's often mixed with a combination of synthetic drugs, where even a tiny bit can be deadly.

New York City is a drug hub for the Northeast and federal agents believe the drugs were going to be sold throughout the area.

The man driving the tractor-trailer is facing federal narcotics and weapons charges.
