Nurses at Montefiore, Mount Sinai hospital systems reach tentative agreements to end strike

NEW YORK (WABC) -- Nurses at the Montefiore and Mount Sinai hospital systems said Monday they have reached tentative agreements to end their strike as it enters a fifth week.

Approximately 10,500 NYSNA members at Montefiore, Mount Sinai Hospital and Mount Sinai Morningside and West reached tentative agreements with their hospitals late Sunday/early Monday.

Members will vote on whether to ratify the contracts and return to work this week.

The deals keep safe staffing rules, protect health benefits, add protections against workplace violence, include limits on artificial intelligence, and a pay raise of more than 12% over three years.

Union leaders say the agreements protect patient care and nurse safety after weeks of striking in harsh weather.

"This fight is something that we really had to fight for, we had to set the ground rules, definitely for the pensions, definitely for the for the patient safety and I mean, we won a lot, we couldn't win a little bit more," said Mount Sinai nurse Carol McGowan.

The tentative agreements apply to only two out of three hospitals involved in the strike.

The 4,200 nurses at NewYork-Presbyterian have not reached agreement and are expected to continue to strike. They returned to the picket line on Monday.

The key sticking point in ongoing negotiations at NewYork-Presbyterian is safe staffing, the union said.

"We feel the management has the capabilities to meet the staffing asks that we're asking and for them to not get there when the other hospitals are able to get there, we just want to go back to work," said NewYork-Presbyterian nurse Kelly Gibney.

Officials with NewYork-Presbyterian said mediators presented a proposal to all parties on Sunday and the hospital has accepted it. It is not yet clear if the nurses will also agree to the deal.
