Subway crime at lowest level in 16 years, ridership up nearly 8%, Hochul says

NEW YORK (WABC) -- Ridership on the New York City subway is on the way up while crime is on the way down, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Thursday.

The governor was joined by NYPD and MTA officials at a briefing to announce that subway crime was at the lowest level in 16 years.

According to the governor's office, this year is on pace to be the second safest non-pandemic year in the subway system in recorded history, eclipsed only by 2009.

The governor credited the increased police presence in the system made possible by $77 million of state funding she provided earlier this year.

"We had a surge of police officers into the subway. We needed that visible presence, that calming presence that a man or woman in uniform brings when people see them on the platforms or in our trains or in our stations," Hochul said.

Hochul said the state would commit an additional $77 million for enhanced subway patrols in 2026.

Meanwhile, the governor also announced that subway ridership continues to climb; ridership is up nearly eight percent this year.
