New York City Department of Transportation Commissioner Mike Flynn kicked off the event in Foley Square, where visitors can take part in fitness classes, dance programs, children's activities and other community events.
The annual program transforms major roadways into vehicle-free corridors and features free Citi Bike rides, art installations, food trucks and community runs.
Summer Streets in Manhattan continues on the next two Saturdays before expanding to Brooklyn and the Bronx.
Saturday's events run through 3 p.m. across the route. Click here to see which roads are closed.
