Police said the city recorded 724 fewer major crimes in August compared with the same month last year. Year-to-date, major crime is down 6.2%, representing more than 5,000 fewer reported crimes citywide.
The NYPD also reported what Commissioner Jessica Tisch called the safest summer on record for shootings, shooting victims and murders. From June through August, the city recorded 195 shooting incidents, 249 shooting victims and 66 murders, all record lows for the period.
In August alone, shooting incidents fell nearly 21% and shooting victims dropped nearly 38% compared with August 2025. Murders declined 34.3%, while robbery, burglary, grand larceny and auto theft also posted decreases.
The Bronx continued to lead the city in crime reduction, with major crime down 11.9% year to date and 10.5% in August.
The department also reported historic lows in violence in the subway system and public housing developments. There were no murders, shootings or rapes reported in the subway system during August, while public housing developments recorded zero murders and record lows for shootings, shooting victims, rapes and robberies.
Not all crime categories declined. Felony assaults increased 3.1% in August and 0.7% year to date, while reported rapes increased 3.2% year to date. Confirmed hate crimes also rose 15.8% compared with the same period last year, though anti-Jewish hate crimes declined in August.
