DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN (WABC) -- It was police work at it's finest when NYPD officers saved a woman who was sitting on the edge of a high-rise building in Brooklyn.

The woman was spotted sitting on the ledge of a building on Duffield Street in Downtown Brooklyn at 1:15 p.m. last Thursday.

Someone called 911 and officers arrived to find the 41-year-old woman in distress and immediately said, "Hi ma'am, please don't do it ma'am."

She was crying and telling the responding officers, "Tell my mom and dad that I love them."

The officer who said his name was Nicholas pleaded with the woman saying, "No, no, no please don't do it. Listen, we care about you and we don't want to see you hurt yourself, OK."

He asked her if he could come closer, he grabbed her arm through the glass and held on tight. He repeatedly told her that they cared.

"Listen, whatever you are going through, we can fix it, we can try to fix it, OK," he said.

She asked if they would take her to the hospital and he reassured her that they would.

"I'm positive, we can do whatever you want to do," he told the woman. "Anything is better than this, OK?"

As he held on to the woman, an ESU team with rappelling gear responded. They quickly secured their equipment and lines to the building so they could safely get to the woman.

That officer, now on the outside of the building, joined her on the ledge and told her, "I told you I was going to come help you, so listen to me: we are going to do this together, OK? We can sit here for 10 minutes, we can sit here for half an hour. I just want to make sure, look at me in my eyes, I want to make sure that you are safe and that you are OK. Like I said, whatever it is that you may be going through OK, I want to help you. I will personally help you OK?"

The woman reached for the officer's hand. She was being held by the first officer that responded through the glass and the other officer that had rappelled over to her on the ledge.

She wasn't ready to go back just yet but the officer on the ledge reassured her.

"Look where we are at, we have the best view in the city. We're here together, we will get you a new phone, we will talk to your mom, we will get you a new phone, and we have you, come on," he said as they stood and carried her over the barrier.

EMS transported the woman to a local hospital for treatment.

The NYPD released a statement on social media commending the efforts of the officers saying,

"Heroism and heart from NY's Finest. When a woman was seated on the ledge of a high-rise building in Brooklyn, our officers quickly responded, using their training to save her life. This is what it takes to protect and serve."
