NYPD police dogs, horses get moment in the spotlight with the 2026 Canine and Friends calendar

HELL'S KITCHEN, Manhattan (WABC) -- A crucial part of the NYPD, dogs, both medium-size and extra large, and horses, get the chance to be supermodels, front and center in the 2026 Canine and Friends calendar.

All proceeds from the sale go to the Police Foundation and its many programs, including, according to Lieutenant Dion Gaspard, "Wellness programs, training programs, technology programs, we even have a program for kids called The Options Proram, and Crimestoppers."

Each dog and horse is named after a fallen officer. Detective Katrina Narvaez's partner Freddy carries her late father's name. Her father was killed in the line of duty in 1996.

"Whatever I imagined, it's so much more than that," Narvaez said. "He's my best friend, he's with me every day. I spend more time with him than my own family."

The duties these animals take on can range, depending on their training and assignment.

"They get called to some very serious situations," Officer Ryan Ferrari said. "Something where a criminal doesn't want to come out, so we utilize the dog, so they do have aggression, so we have to be careful."

The bond between officer and animal runs deep and takes years to develop.

"Sometimes I don't have to talk to him," Officer Michael Bellinger said. "I can look at him and he knows what I want from him."
