RAHWAY, New Jersey (WABC) -- Multiple people are in custody after a police detective was injured in a shooting in New Jersey on Wednesday night.

Authorities say the Perth Amboy police detective was shot up to three times while executing a search warrant in front of 1076 Broad Street.

The officer was struck in the legs and taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick in stable condition.

Perth Amboy detectives were in Rahway attempting to execute an arrest warrant for 20-year-old Angel Santiago, who is a suspect in an aggravated assault incident that occurred on July 23.

As police approached the area, there was an exchange of gunfire between detectives and Santiago, resulting in the Perth Amboy detective suffering multiple gunshot wounds to the leg and Santiago suffering a single gunshot wound to the lower leg.

Rahway Mayor Raymond Giaccobbe later posted on Facebook that all suspects were in custody.

On Thursday morning, New Jersey Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin issued a statement about the shooting.

"Our officers deserve our gratitude for the enormous risks they take on a daily basis to keep our communities safe. As the state's chief law enforcement officer, I am resolute in my commitment to work with our law enforcement and community partners to end gun violence in our state, and to do everything in our power to prevent this kind of violence against law enforcement in the future," Platkin said.

In the past seven months, six police officers have been shot in New Jersey.

Most recently, an NYPD detective and New Jersey police officer were both struck by gunfire in Woodbridge in June.
