Speed cameras coming to NYC work zones on June 30

NEW YORK (WABC) -- Speed cameras will be activated in active work zones at bridges and tunnels across New York City beginning June 30, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority said - aiming to curb dangerous driving that puts construction crews at risk.

Drivers say speeding through work areas is common.

"I see it every morning. 4:30 in the morning - they're flying," one commuter said.

The MTA's new enforcement effort will place speed cameras in work zones at the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge, Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge, Henry Hudson Bridge, Hugh L. Carey Tunnel, Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge, Queens Midtown Tunnel, Robert F. Kennedy Bridge, Throgs Neck Bridge and Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge.

Ride-share driver Shahidul said the dangers are clear.

"A lot of construction zones in this city. So in the city construction zones - must be careful because people are working," he said.

According to the MTA, nearly 900 people were killed and 40,000 injured in work zones nationwide in 2023.

Drivers caught going more than 10 mph over the posted limit will first receive a warning. Fines will then escalate: $50 for a first offense, $75 for a second offense within 18 months and $100 for each subsequent violation.

One driver suggested the penalties should go further.

"I personally like the way they do it in Finland where they bill you by your income. The more money you make the higher your fee is," he said.

The MTA said each active work zone will include an unmarked vehicle equipped with radar and camera technology. Signs will also be posted to alert drivers.

Some motorists remain skeptical.

"I think it's just a money grab to be honest. I don't think it's going to make anyone slow down," said Jeremiah, a driver.

The MTA noted that violations will be treated as non-moving offenses, meaning they will not appear on driving records or be reported to insurance companies.
