Chainsaws, heavy machinery and ConEd workers all descended on Scarsdale Monday, which was the hardest hit area when storms rolled through around 8 p.m.
"My husband just happened to look outside, and he screamed, 'Everyone, just go to the basement just in case,'" resident Jodi Boockvar said.

The storm roared through an area near the Saxon Woods Golf Course, and while the damage wasn't widespread, it was extensive.
A maple tree split right down the middle and knocked out power to one side of Lenox Place, while across Mamaroneck Road, utility crews replaced a pole held together by the power lines.
A pair of large trees just missed two homes on Heathcote Road.
"Very scary, pouring, huge downpour and very dark and trees were really whipping around," resident Marjorie Wynan said. "I've never seen anything like it."
Neighbors said the windswept storm brought horizontal rain and lasted about 10 minutes -- a furious 10 minutes.
"I was under the impression it was a tornado," resident Claudia Wolloch said. "There were gale force winds. Debris was hitting the windows with such incredible force. I really thought the windows were going to blow out."
The Department of Public Works reported several roadway closures due to fallen trees and wires, though the closures were easing throughout the day Monday.
Village and ConEd crews are working to clear streets.

Drivers are encouraged to avoid these areas.
At the peak of the outages, nearly 1,200 were without power in Westchester County.
Residents are urged to stay clear of any downed trees or wires and please report any power outages to ConEd at 1-800-752-6633.
