HEMPSTEAD, Long Island (WABC) -- An alleged MS-13 gang member is in custody on attempted murder charges in connection with an attack on his ex-girlfriend on Long Island.

Nassau County police say a 32-year-old woman went to a home in Hempstead to discuss financial assistance for her child, 14, with her ex-boyfriend's mother.

Upon arrival she was confronted by her ex-boyfriend, 30-year-old Kenny Cruz, who began to argue with the victim, according to investigators.

Cruz allegedly punched the woman in the face multiple times, threw her to the ground and began to kick her.

Police say Cruz grabbed a stapler and struck the victim on top of her head several times, causing deep lacerations and exposing her skull, then continued to kick her in the face before grabbing a pair of scissors and stabbing her three times, causing deep lacerations.

The woman attempted to call 911 from her cellular phone, however, Cruz forcibly took the phone and prevented her from calling for help, police said.

The victim was able to run out of the building and drive her car home. She was then transported to an area hospital by her mother.

The victim suffered three stab wounds, a collapsed lung and multiple lacerations.

During the incident, police say Cruz's mother attempted to prevent the assault and he threatened her with scissors.

Cruz faces multiple charges including attempted murder, robbery, and assault.
