Police: Newtown science teacher carried gun into middle school, stopped by officer

NEWTOWN, Connecticut (WABC) -- A science teacher at Newtown Middle School in Connecticut was arrested for allegedly carrying a gun in school Wednesday morning.

According to the Newtown Police Department, the teacher -- 46-year-old Jason Adams -- was stopped by an armed school security officer, who is a retired police officer. Witnesses had reported that Adams entered the school with a concealed weapon.

Newtown police said no one was ever in any danger.

The teacher had legal gun permit, but it is against the law to carry a loaded weapon in a school. He's been charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds.

The school district released a statement, saying "This matter is very serious and troubling, both the Newtown Public School system and the Newtown Police Department took immediate steps to address the matter. The teacher was immediately detained by security personnel."

The district added that the teacher is on administrative leave pending an internal investigation.

There is an armed school security officer in every Newtown school following a mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012.
