Shot fired during robbery attempt inside dorm at St. John's University in Queens

JAMAICA ESTATES, Queens (WABC) -- St. John's University in Queens sent out an alert to students Wednesday after a shot was fired during a robbery attempt inside a dormitory.

The incident happened Wednesday at about 1:25 p.m. inside a dorm room at Hollis Hall on the Jamaica Estates campus.

The school said on social media that the incident involved three men with a gun, and that the men have been apprehended by the NYPD.

Law enforcement officials told Eyewitness News that the three robbers -- 17, 18 and 21 years old -- went into the room and tried to rob four students who live there. One of the robbers is a former student, which is how they knew the victims and were able to get in.

The shot that was fired hit a chair and then the wall, sources said. No one was injured.

The robbers then took off without getting anything, and they were arrested by NYPD officers at 167th Street near the Grand Central Parkway. A gun and a knife were recovered. Charges are pending.

The NYPD says the incident was drug related and that the would-be robbers had a large number of pills on them.

St. John's University Public Safety. St. John's University resident students report 3 males entered their Hollis Hall residence and displayed a gun, discharged a bullet and attempted to remove money. The police have apprehended the males involved off campus and are currently investigating. There is no continuing threat to our community at this time.

A student at the university submitted the photo above to Eyewitness News, showing a large police presence outside Hollis Hall.

St. John's University said there is no longer a threat to the campus and that all is clear.
