LOS ANGELES (WABC) -- The countdown is officially on to Oscar Sunday, which is just a few days away.

Production crews have rolled out the red carpet as the stars prep to head to Hollywood.

But you don't have to be an A-lister to get close to your favorite celebrities, thanks to the brand new Academy Museum.

And to visit it is to come face to face with the magic of the movies and step behind the silver screen to see how that magic was made.

"It allows the public, the general public, to get connected even closer to the characters in films that they loved," Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences president Cheryl Boone Isaacs said.

From "Superman" and "Spider-Man," timeless and "Titanic," Marilyn to "Moulin Rouge," the transformation of an old department store in the heart of Hollywood has already begun.

"Along with this historic building, we are building a sphere that is going to house a 1,000-seat theater," Boone Isaacs said.

It's a unique space where Hollywood's past, present and future could meet.

"It really bring the process of moviemaking to life for people," actor Tony Goldwyn said.

Goldwyn may be best known for his 'Scandal'-ous role as the president of the United States, but his father was a famous producer and his grandfather won two Oscars.

"It's something that gives me a sense of continuity, you know?" he said. "Looking

forward and being able to look back."

Goldwyn's experience may be unique, but soon every visitor -- famous or not -- will come to share our common heritage found at the movies.
