NEW YORK (WABC) -- A publicist said Shia LaBeouf is being treated for alcoholism.

Melissa Kates said Tuesday the 28-year-old actor has not checked into a rehab facility but is receiving voluntary treatment for alcohol addiction.

Kates said in a statement that LaBeouf's recent actions - which include an arrest for disrupting a Broadway play - are symptoms of a larger health problem.

She said he has taken the first of many necessary steps toward recovery.

LaBeouf was released from jail Friday after he was removed from a New York City theater for allegedly being disorderly and causing a disruption Thursday night.

The wild scene played out at Studio 54 on Broadway during a performance of "Cabaret." The 28-year-old actor was hauled out of the show in handcuffs after he was seen smoking. He was asked to leave, but refused, police said. He was seen crying as he talked to officers outside.

Some say he appeared drunk, but that was not one of the charges. He was charged with disorderly conduct and harassment. He was held overnight and appeared in court Friday morning, where he was released without bail.

According to the criminal complaint, the police said LaBeouf was yelling as he was removed from the theater.

"I observed the defendant scream at me in substance: "F--- you. This is f---ing bullshit. Do you know my life? Do you know who the f--- I am? Do you know who I am?" I observed approximately ten pedestrians turn to look as the defendant screamed at me," said the complaint.

"During arrest processing at the Midtown North Precinct, I observed the defendant spit in my direction and observed the spit land at my feet," it said.

Showgoers were shocked by his bizarre behavior.

"He was quite a mess," one patron said. "He had a torn shirt, he had a cigarette, he was blending into the crowd, trying to and chasing bums and craziness."

"He just walked up to the bar inside of 'Cabaret' and grabbed a strawberry and fed it to some woman off of her plate," another added. "And then tipped the bartender and ran out."

LaBeouf starred in "Transformers" and other films, including "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," ''Disturbia" and "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps."

He also made headlines back in February at the Berlin Film Festival, where he also had some strange behavior, including wearing a paper bag over his head.

The actor was arrested for drunken driving in 2008 after he crashed his pickup truck, injuring his hand and knee.
